Things To Do | PLACES TO SEE AND THINGS TO DO WHILE YOU ARE VISITING BLACKWATER! *BLACKWATER COAL CENTRE Incorporating more than 20 exhibits, the Australian coal mining museum explores the past, present & future of the Australian coal mining industry. Discover how coal deposits were formed over millions of years, step back in time with video memoirs of Bowen Basin residents and early coal mining pioneers and learn how the mining industry once worked. Explore the future present & past of coal mining at the Blackwater Coal centre. *MINE TOURS Mine tours are run every wednesday at 10am and 1pm and Fridays at 10am.. weather and mine conditions permiting. To find out more about tours call the Blackwater International Coal center on 4982 7755 *THE JAPANESE GARDENS Private gardens are available to walk around when you visit the BICC and the Australian Coal Mining Museum, they are open Monday to Friday 9am - 3pm. There are a large variety of unusual native plants and trees in a tranquil garden setting known as the timeless garden. Surrounded by unique species of plants from all over the world some of which you wont find anywhere else in Australia. A sacred bottle tree was relocated in 2008 and now resides at the centre of the landscaped lawns. *BLACKDOWN TABLELANDS NATIONAL PARK Blackdown Tablelands is located just 64.4km from Blackwater. Rising above the surrounding plains the park protects deep gorges spectacluar lookouts and scenic waterfalls. Rockfaces display traditional Ghungalu artwork. There is sealed road up to the spectacular Horse Shoe lookout, to go further than here to see mimosa ponds and the beautiful Rainbow Falls it is recomended for 4wd vehicles, However if there hasnt been much rain the dirt tracks are not to bad and can be accessed by most cars. *BEDFORD WEIR Bedford weir is located 28.9km from Blackwater. The Bedford weir is a man-made impoundment on the Mackenzie river. A great place to visit if your are into your water sports, popular spot for locals and tourist for water skiing and fishing, there is a camp ground located at the weir with toilets showers etc. Bedford weir holds many fishing competitions each year and has a local ski club. Great day out on the water or just to go for a picnic. *GEMFIELDS The Central Queensland Sapphire Gemfields are only a 45 minute drive west of Emerald (four hours west of Rockhampton) on the Capricorn Highway and cover almost 900 square kilometres. People from all over the world descend on the Sapphire Gemfields each year to experience fossicking firsthand and try their luck to find the ultimate gem discovery.
