Things To Do | Charters Towers is a thriving community in Tropical North Queensland. Located 130 km south-west of Townsville , Charters Towers offers holiday makers a unique glimpse of Outback Queensland. Charters Towers has a colourful history as Queensland’s richest gold-mining area from 1872 until the early 20th century. After 89 years the goldfields are being reopened and gold was produced again from the Warrior Mine 4 km southeast of the town in November 2006 by Citigold Corporation Limited. Some reports suggest that more there is more gold underground than the total removed in the gold rush of the late 1800s. Charters Towers services a large pastoral region with rich agriculture opportunities that have grown up around the Burdekin River, which feeds the Burdekin falls dam, the largest dam in Queensland. The Burdekin is one of Australia's most important rivers after the Murray. Charters Towers has 4 high schools which form an important education base for residents of Far North Queensland. These four are: Columba Catholic College, Blackheath and Thornborough College, All Souls Saint Gabriels School and Charters Towers State High School. Heritage Lodge is often recommended for parents coming to visit children boarding at these schools. There are a range of events on the Charters towers calendar including a large Country Music Festival held every year, Goldfield Ashes Cricket Carnival Charters, Pastoral Agricultural and Mining Show, and the Restorer’s Club Swap Meet (on show are vintage cars and equipment). |
